Joyce Meyer -don’t act like you don’t know she’s my fave female teacher. Lol!- once defined a habit as something we repetitiously do. Prior to that, without consulting any dictionary, I wrongly assumed that there was more to habit formulation than that . Like something scientific or technical that makes it complicated.
But very recently, I realized that her simple definition was apt. Spot on in fact.
So before this particular time, I was not big on gossip blogs at all. However, I must confess that I usually go there from time to time to read on beauty and general fashion. I can’t even deny that I enjoy that very much.
Lately, I found myself doing more than my once-in-a-while check. I became a regular on this particular site and Instagram. I bet you know the excuses we give ourselves in our quest to cover up our excesses, right? I gave myself one ‘Shebi, it’s just checking a website and Instagram? What’s the big deal in it?’.
Well, there was a BIG deal. I was spending too much time reading about other people’s stories. Imagine I was wasting precious MBs reading something as pointless as ‘XYZ star hosts her friends at an exclusive restaurant in LA to celebrate whatever’. And my reason for this was just ‘to know what’s going on’.
It didn’t take me time to realize that I was spending less time meditating on the word; reading books that impact and inspire me. Something was definitely wrong .
Then one day, I went back to IG for no reason, looking at people’s pictures like it had the capacity to quench the thirst within me, then I silently asked ‘what’s wrong?’.
And these words came to me ‘My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water’. – Jeremiah 2:13
This made me sober cos I knew it was true . It was soooo true for me. Ask any regular visitor/addict on lifestyle blog why they spend/waste too much precious time reading stories that add no value? They will most likely tell you that ‘they just needed something to take their time and that looked like the best alternative’.
To be honest, that’s not an alternative at all. No blog or website (not even mine) should take the place of God in our lives. For a second, try to imagine what would happen if we converted our ‘gossip time’ on blogs to ‘word time’ or ‘simple prayer’ time. Now imagine how much better off we would feel. How much revelation and understanding
we would get.
It’s amazing some of our excuses for not spending quality time with God includes ‘my schedule is just too tight’. I find that very laughable because even the busiest bankers still have time to read blogs countless times in a day as though their lives depend on it (not to mention checking friends Facebook updates as though it’s the same
as bank alerts ).
See, there’s a GOD SIZE vacuum in ALL of us and spending the whole day on lifestyle blogs/IG won’t fill it .
Do not get me wrong, I’m not trying to call people out. If anything I am calling myself out because doing so helps me change my habits (weird as it is ). With the help of God, of course.
You have wasted enough time on blogs. And I have wasted too much time up on celebrity news. Its high time we REPENT and place priority on what’s truly important and beneficial. Dr Mike Murdock once said at a conference I attended in Lagos ‘you do not have a right to anything you haven’t pursued’.
Do you want more of God? Then pursue Him. Do you need wisdom? Read the book of Proverbs. Are you feeling depressed? Read Psalm 143 prayerfully. Or do you just want a general catch up on the word? Then the new testament is a good place to start.
When life punches you, that’s not when you need another dose of celebrity gossip. That’s when you need a mega dose of the word.
When you feel empty, stop. And run to the living water that can actually satisfy the longing of your soul, not broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Like we used to say in my former office after a meeting “What’s the action point? ”
Here it is: To pledge.
I’ll go first.
I pledge to consciously reduce my visits to read about other people’s stories, and actually convert that ‘gossip time’ to ‘word time’. So help me God .
And just before you think you can’t pledge because you ‘feel’ you ‘can’t do it’, remember that ‘you can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you ‘.
