You love him. He loves you. Just thinking about the person gives you butterflies in your tummy 😍. You have weighed all options and have come to a common ground: we want to be together for the rest of our lives. So, you pick a date. Invite family and friends. Get the right venue (at least for the sake of the gram 😜) and you’re ready to say “I do”.
Everyone is excited. And the ones that are not would not dare raise a hand when the priest asks “if there’s anyone who has a reason why this wedding should not hold, let him speak now or forever remain silent” 😂😂😂 . So you recite your vows including the part that says “for better or for worse” and viola, you’re pronounced husband and wife 💑.
This analogy very well reminds me of our relationship with God. For most people, when we first came to know Him, we were super excited. We were willing to go the extra mile. We were confident in His abilities to help us in our time of need. Because He always comes through each and every time. So without wasting time, we say “I do” and gave our lives to Him💃🏻.
Then…life starts to happen to us and what do we start to do? The very things we never imagined possible – doubts start to creep up on us – wait, is God really faithful? Does He always do what He says He’d do? Does He abandon us in the middle of a storm? And then of course, these doubts start to reflect in our attitude towards the things of God – our love begins to grow cold 😔.
We get to the point where we’re no longer as excited as we used to be about the things of God. Bible study time is now #BBNAIJA time because “hello, that is what everyone is talking about” 😂😂😂😂
Truth is, when things get difficult is not the time for us to distance ourselves from God. That is often the best time to draw even closer to God.
The Bible asks us to “…draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need”. That means God expects us to reach out to Him in time of trouble.
I believe God is not looking for fair-weathered believers. Those ones who’d only stick with Him when everything is rosy. Instead God is looking for true worshipers who will worship Him in spirit and truth. Those people who would defy their flesh and say “I don’t know what or why this is happening but though He slay me yet will I trust Him”. God is not looking for quitters. God is looking for people who would dig their heels in when life gets difficult and say “I still trust God”.
So…what’s the action point? Ask God to search you and reveal to you the kind of believer that you’re. And…do whatever He shows you to do afterwards 😘.
