So, I was walking back from the laundromat the other day and was pretty much thinking about everything I was upset about. Of course, I became upset and quickly developed a not-so-thankful attitude towards God. This went on for minutes .
As I continued to walk home it occurred to me that in the midst of life, we’re actually expected to look for things to be thankful for, irrespective of whatever is going on in our lives at the moment. I believe that’s what this verse means “…if there’s anything praiseworthy…think on these things”.
Let me give you an illustration. Let’s say you’ve been searching for a job for about a year to no avail (this is not moi-moi, by the way. I understand and God does too ), but instead of constantly thinking “Cynthia works with Chevron, Tunde works with Total, Bimpe works with KPMG. We finished school at the same time. And I even had a better grade but I am the one that is jobless. God what have I done. Would you continue to look at me this way?” .
Just in case you’re wondering, this is no prayer. If I’m allowed to say it as it is – this is nothing but a pity-party and I don’t recall God recommending it as a way to pray . Or do you? .
Rather than thinking negatively as described above, you could think this way “I have not had a job for a year now but God has miraculously met my needs. So Dear Lord, I thank You for provision. I exalt You for miraculously meeting my needs. Father, I ask that You bless me with a good job too so that I can be a blessing to others. So that you can use me to meet someone else’s need as you have used others to meet my own needs. Lord you promised in your word that You’re
“…able to make all grace (every favor and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation].”
– 2 Corinthians 9:8.
“Thank You Lord for answered prayer. Thank you Father because my job is on the way in Jesus name”.
This is the kind of prayer that gets God’s attention and move Him to act on your behalf.
How did I know? Because it happened to me. I was SUPER discouraged and ready to give up. Then I decided to do this instead and “taku ti jesu” (no translation available at this time. LOL). And…..God showed up. And I’m encouraging you to do this because what God does for one, He’ll do for another. Like the Bible clearly says He is no respecter of persons.
Remember, it all starts with being thankful on purpose, then praying Gods word. If we would do this with a sincere heart, I believe we’ll see the hand of God regardless of whether the case is a job, spouse, health issue or whatever .
