Ask anybody why they do anything and you’d find out there’s a reason for it. You see, we all have reasons why we do what we do. For instance, we eat because we get hungry, we wear tank tops when the weather is crazy hot, we cover up completely during harmattan season, we follow people on Twitter because they are outspoken, intelligent, reasonable or just simply ‘fun fun fun’.
Whether any of the above stated reason is good or bad is subjective. The most important thing is – we all have different reasons for doing what we do.
In the same way, I believe if you ask an average tither why he tithes, he would have some good explanation to give.
I’ll use myself as an example. For a very long time, and I mean really loooooooong time, I had a reason for tithing albeit a wrong one. I was tithing out of fear, I was tithing because I didn’t want the devourer to steal my things 😖.
I remember a scenario vividly, there was a particular month, for whatever reason, I couldn’t tithe, and I was so sad because of two things 😒 :
- I knew I had erred
- I was super afraid that the devil finally got the chance to devour my things
This made me so full of fear. To say I was anxious would be an understatement 😖.
Few days later, I was about to jump on a bus to work and I just couldn’t stop thinking ‘what if I enter one chance bus? Would I be able to look up to God and pray? What if the one chance guys on the bus takes all my belongings and beats life out of me? That would serve me right, right? After all, I deserved it?’ 😭😭😭😭😭😭.
LOL. It would interest you to know that none of these happened. You can say, God is full of mercy 💪💪.
Then recently, a thought provoking question popped in my mind ‘why are you tithing, anyway?’ Are you tithing because you’re so afraid of the devil and how he would gladly devour you for not paying your tithes? Or are you paying tithes because you believe and honor God with your substance, because you believe He’ll indeed open the windows of heaven and meet your needs? 😕
Before you read on, do pause and answer the question above. Okay?😊.
Why is the question so important, by the way? Because your response to that question will determine the result you get. You see, answering ‘Yes’ to the first question shows you’re tithing out of fear. Because you’re afraid the devil will come for you, should you renege for a month. This is wrong because God never asks us to obey Him from a position of fear. He wants us to honor Him and His word because we love and believe Him. The Bible says ‘God has not given us the spirit of fear’. Fear keeps us in bondage and God wouldn’t put us in the same shackles He saved us from. Or would He? 😏
And a ‘Yes’ to the second question is the one that honors God. Shows we totally depend and trust Him. Please note that as believers, there’s no two ways. We MUST pay our tithes at all times. Reasons:
- Paying tithes ensures there’s enough in God’s house.
- Gives God a ‘good excuse’ to ‘open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it’ .
- Gives Him permission to rebuke the devourer for our sakes. You see, we’re not supposed to be soooo afraid of the devourer. God already promised to take care of him in Person. How sweet? 😋
- The last reason is so exciting. God promises that if we will tithe, then ‘all nations shall call you happy and blessed, for you shall be a land of delight’. I don’t know about you, but I sure want to be genuinely happy, blessed and be a land of delight 🙌.
For a complete reference on tithing, please see Malachi 3:10-12 (I use Amplified Bible, Classic Edition, by the way).
And yes if you ask me now “Arin, why are you tithing?”, my response would be “…because I don’t want to rob God. And most importantly, because I’m taking Him at His word on His promise to ‘open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it’.
So, over to you. Why are you tithing, anyway?
